Eminem History

๐ŸŽค A Brief History of Eminem

Marshall Bruce Mathers III, known professionally as Eminem, was born on October 17, 1972. Raised in Detroit, Michigan, he overcame a rough childhood marked by poverty and bullying. His passion for rap began early, and he gained recognition in Detroit’s underground battle rap scene.

He released his debut album, Infinite, in 1996, but it wasn’t until 1999's The Slim Shady LP—backed by Dr. Dre—that Eminem gained massive national fame. The album went multi-platinum and introduced his chaotic, alter ego Slim Shady.

From there, Eminem delivered a streak of critically acclaimed and commercially successful albums:

  • The Marshall Mathers LP (2000)

  • The Eminem Show (2002)

  • Encore (2004)

  • Recovery (2010)

  • Kamikaze (2018)

  • Music to Be Murdered By (2020)

  • The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grรขce) (2024)

Beyond music, Eminem starred in the semi-autobiographical film 8 Mile, for which he won an Oscar for "Lose Yourself"—the first rap song to win Best Original Song.

He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with over 220 million records sold globally.
